This season of the show moves on five years after the last, a bold step in itself, but one that turns out to make absolute sense. Love Hewitt’s character, Melinda, had a child, and the shift in time allows us to see the powers that her son possesses. It sets the scene for a compelling series of The Ghost Whisperer, and one that clearly has a lot more story to tell.

The sad thing, though, is that this is the last season of the show, as it was cancelled in the US, with little hope of renewal. This is a real pity. The Ghost Whisperer has always taken a premise that could fall on the wrong side of cliché, and invested it with interesting drama. And it keeps those standards high right through to the end.

It’s a shame to see The Ghost Whisperer go. But it leaves behind five seasons ripe for discovery, and its brave final series run absolutely doesn’t let the side down.
