When it comes to punk, Sweden isn't the first country that comes to my mind. However back in 1995 there was a band I remember by the name of Wolfpack that were prevalent amongst the Crust punkers of Sweden, and moving into the 20's after the millennium, they became the more hardcore Wolfbrigade. Now back in their element they have brought us their latest album “Damned” which serves to prove that hardcore can get more! hardcore.
Bursting straight in with the first song “Feed the Flames” the song does just that, it’s a perfect intro to the album and gets your heart racing with brutality and hardcore heavy riffs with melodious lead work thrown over the top. The progression in this track is thrash infused and driving, which is pretty much guaranteed to satisfy any urges to head bang and really dive into the track.
But it doesn’t stop there, the album is full of Brutal thrash infused progressions, each track is like an epic battle of blood sweat and tears followed up with purging flame, like I said before hardcore CAN get more hardcore!
The vocal work is rife with a demonic persona that screams terror in your face and is very much concise with the guitars of the album, however they feel under mixed somewhat, and almost sound like they’re being shouted from underneath a duvet. The guitars work fantastically overall in creating a hardcore downbeat that drill right throughout the album, I love the simplicity of the riffs, it makes enjoying the brutality of the album much easier, but from time to time it feels as though it’s been stuck on repeat and I was unsure at times if the song had moved on. Drums on the album are the real driving force behind each riff, each machine gun blast of the double bass, only makes you scream for more.
Overall a fantastic album, it’s great to see promising bands come out of Sweden that are not with the usual death metal crowd. Damned is sure to be a top choice album for fans of the more hardcore of punk genres and Wolfbrigade are hitting it hard to be heard these days. The dynamic of the band is simplicity and brutality and who would want more, if you want hardcore Wolfbrigade will surely give you a taste of their mettle.
