Given time to make the necessary adjustments both in the physical position of the camera as well as the controls, the L-1ex can produce excellent, clear images both at its widest shooting area and also at its closest zoom setting. A3-sized documents are viewable in their entirety (good for maps and large photos) and smaller objects, such as a £1 coin, can be zoomed in on – to the extent that you can see every scratch.

While we’re handing out praise, it’s worth noting that the built-in SD card reader allows for stand-alone saving of still images, though video recording needs to be done via computer using the Elmo software. Both live and recorded video images are clear with no visible lag or blurring.

The Elmo L-1ex takes up a relatively small amount of desk space and has the potential to produce very high-quality images as long as teachers have the time and confidence to set it up. The problem is that, without these, it’s easy to get frustrated and give up. A product refresh – coming soon – might fix these issues, but they’re enough put the more expensive Samsung SDP-860 one step ahead.
