The book you have in your hands does not lay ciaim to historical or chronological se-
J auence. My intention in taking shots of our venerable ci/y was not to present a history of its architectural styles but to help its people as well as its visitors to make a free round through Old Vilnius without the traditional guide whose historical references this volume will complement though with morę intimate impressions. My aim was to let the interested sightseer feel aione in the old city so that he or she could get an insight into the mood which gets hołd of you walking alone along the still desert streets at daybreak, peaping into historie courtyards, or climbing high towers or the hills around the city. The book deals with the city and not with its people. Therefore I aimed my camera away from people, away from traffic and cars, away from all that distracts one^s attention and hinders one from tuning in oneys imagination on the past.
And the striking simplicity of Old Vilnius is charming. It boks as if all the past generałions of Vilnius people have cherished the beauty of the city^s neighbourhood so much that they did their best not to obscure it with their construetions so that these have ultimately blended with the scenery into a harmoniom whole.
The sun was my guide — I followed it as much as I could. It has the knack of showing you the vistas of streets, the roofs of houses, the cobbles of pavements, the time-worn brick and stone wali, the leafage of trees different at different times. The same things bok ąuite different in spring and in autumn, on a hoary winter morning and at a sultry July midday.
It goes without saying that one book cannot exhaust the theme of our time-honoured Old City. Each photographer will see it in his own way, and there will never come the day when the theme of Yilnius will be exhausted.
