ABSTRACT :
The analysis of the changes in water condition and the river pattern of the old Poznań area
suggests great changes. It is connected with a varying role of the rivers and water in different
periods of development of Poznań and also with the fact that city was expanding from the bottom
of the valley to the high plain. In the first period of the development of Poznań i.e. from the 10th
to the 18th c., the river pattern was the most important factor influencing the system of defence
and the economic development of the city. The second stage of the transformation of the water
conditions in Poznań covered the period from the end of 18th c. to the beginning of the 20th. c.
In this period the natural physiographic conditions within the city were destoyed. The third stage
of transformation in the hydrological conditions covers the period from the beginning of the 20th c.
until the present time. In tliis time drainage works are predominant on newly aquired city grounds.
