The success of Prince Jammy as a producer saw the superstars of reggae music form a line to record at his Waterhouse stronghold to be a part of the Waterhouse hit machine.
1979’s Sugar Minott’s Bitter Sweet found the Black Roots star voicing classic after classic including ‘Give The People’, ‘Never Too Young’ & I’m Not For Sale’ to deliver one of 1979’s stand out albums. 1985 saw a return to creative form for Dennis Brown in the recording of two fine albums for Jammy, The Exit, the first of those acclaimed sets yielded the hit single ‘Material Girl’ and overall this is solid set from the crown prince of reggae that is long overdue re-evaluation.
Gregory Isaacs’s Come Along from ‘88 is another example of Jammy’s skill at getting the best out of his artists for this is acknowledged as one of the Cool Rulers finest later period albums with the mellow mood set by Gregory’s fine vocal performance and well thought out song selection including the hits ‘Give Love A Try’ & ‘Bits And Pieces’.
Horace Andy’s global superstardom brought about by his team-ups with Massive Attack was just around the corner but Horace’s work with Studio One & Bunny Lee had already sealed his rightful place in the Reggae hall of fame. Haul & Pull Up recorded in 1987 for King Jammy and featuring ‘Sleepy’ on fine form on songs like ‘Come In A Dis’ & ‘Must Have Fe Get It” was another stepping stone on his path to future glory.
