Praca ta to zbiór ponad 80 unikatowych obrazów przedstawiających setki postaci, z których każda nosi inny mundur. Przedstawiają one różne formacje wojsk Wielkiej Brytanii, Niemiec, Francji, Austrii, Węgier, Belgii, Holandii, Włoch, Portugalii, Rosji, Hiszpanii i Szwecji. Całość została okraszona wprowadzeniem, krótkim przedstawieniem cech charakterystycznych dla umundurowania występującego w danym kraju, struktury danej armii, szczegółowym opisem przedstawionych kolorowych ilustracji oraz komentarzem autora. Dzieła te powstały podczas podróży ich autora po Europie na rok przed wybuchem I wojny światowej. Tuż przed nią obrazy były wystawiane w Lipsku, i niedługo po tym miały zostać opublikowane. Between 1908 and 1914, A. E. Haswell Miller travelled Europe, making an artist's record of the continent's national armies. He did this with great attention to detail, aware that the splendid uniforms were being phased out as the nature of warfare changed. This line collection of watercolours, peppered with Haswell Miller's comments and observations, is a priceless window into the world of imperial confidence and pomp in the days before the horrors of trench warfare changed everything. Painted in the early 1900s by A. E. Haswell Miller, a Scottish artist and army officer with a fascination for military dress, this unique collection of British and European military uniforms now appears in print for the first time. Haswell Miller travelled widely in Europe as a young artist before the outbreak of the First World War, faithfully recording the rich variety and ostentation of contemporary uniform, knowing that these variations were starting to disappear. From 1914 this trend was greatly accelerated as Europe went to war and swathes of enlisted men and officers were clothed in simpler uniforms and materials. During his service in that war, he continued to paint and sketch whenever the opportunity arose, and this collection of plates includes several completed during and after the war. These watercolours and his notes, accompanied by supplementary information from editor John Mollo, will be of interest to researchers and serious students of military history, as well as those with a more general interest in the development of military dress...
