Though the wild, Catholic Farrells and the strait-laced, Protestant McNaughtons live less than a mile apart, it is only when the Farrells' Aunt Biddy, who has walked to Durham from famine-torn Ireland, is found exhausted in a ditch by Greg McNaughton, that the two clans are brought together.

Despite her unease, Shona is fascinated to find out more about Greg McNaughton, and his wife - the strange, shadowy mother of little Lauretta. Then on Christmas Day, Greg’s mother Margaret is found wandering the streets and the local prostitute, Maudie Martin, is discovered dead.

The finger of guilt points at Shona's brother, Tommo. Distraught, Shona follows Tommo's trail to the streets of Manchester, a road which Greg McNaughton is also treading for reasons of his own.
