While most long-running TV series run out of gas well before their eighth year, The X-Files refueled and revved its creative motor with the addition of new cast members and a return to popular motifs from its salad days. The 2000-01 season could have been irreparably damaged by the drastically scaled-back participation of David Duchovny, whose Agent Mulder appeared in only a few episodes. But series creator Chris Carter avoided disaster by adding a new character, Special Agent John Doggett (Robert Patrick), to take Mulder's place beside Scully (Gillian Anderson). Carter maintained balance in the season's plots by employing role reversal: As Season 8 commences, the years with Mulder have finally made a true believer of Scully, and newcomer Doggett exhibits the skepticism that was once hers. The alien conspiracy continues to loom large, and stand-alone story lines feature the usual array of bizarre menaces and paranormal phenomena. As the season progresses, Agent Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) assumes a more prominent role, taking part in a controversial "hit" that left the show's fans dumbfounded. Additionally, a new agent, Monica Reyes (Annabeth Gish), is introduced for added female allure. At once similar to and different than the series' popular early episodes, Season 8's 21 installments represent a startling and successful revamping of The X-Files. Ed Hulse
