The narrative seeds planted in earlier episodes of The X-Files blossom memorably in the show's sixth season, providing answers to some questions while hinting at the existence of darker, as yet unsuspected truths. Back for 22 more episodes, David Duchovny (playing FBI agent Fox Mulder) and Gillian Anderson (as agent Dana Scully) now wear their roles like comfortable sweaters, and the stars' potent chemistry strengthens their characters' emotional bonds, renewed amid shocking revelations. Among the highlights of this well-crafted group are "Dreamland," a two-parter in which Mulder switches bodies with a formidable adversary; "How the Ghosts Stole Christmas," a seemingly traditional haunted-house story embellished with typically weird X-Files touches; and "The Unnatural," an installment written and directed by Duchovny, detailing Mulder's discovery of alien infiltration into America's National Pastime. The series' most memorable one-two punch is delivered in back-to-back episodes: "Two Fathers" introduces Cassandra Spender, the first successful human-alien hybrid developed by scientists working for the sinister Syndicate; in the follow-up, "One Son," Cassandra outlines for Mulder and Scully the connection between the Syndicate and warring alien factions, additionally providing insights into the abductions of both Scully and Mulder's younger sister, Samantha. Season Six represents the apotheosis of the entire series, making this six-disc Collector's Edition DVD box set a must-have for X-Files devotees. Supplemental features on the Collector's Edition set include a newly filmed documentary titled "The Truth About Season Six"; a behind-the-scenes featurette; 15 deleted and alternate scenes with optional commentary by co-producer Frank Spotnitz; a character profile of the Cigarette Smoking Man; a commentary by series creator Chris Carter accompanying the episode "Triangle"; 44 promotional spots; and a DVD-ROM game based on the "Dreamland" episodes.
