With The X-Files drawing to a close after nine sublimely spooky seasons, viewers trying to recall the show's glory days need look no further than this handsomely packaged six-disc Collector's Edition, which includes all 20 episodes from Season Five and myriad special features as well. The fifth season represents Chris Carter's influential series at its creative peak, as FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) gradually come to comprehend the enormity of the enveloping conspiracies they've been investigating for years. Carter's long-running redefinition of the sci-fi genre -- which has encompassed everything from psychically gifted serial killers to malevolent genetic anomalies and extraterrestrial invaders -- is famous for its mesmerizing quality, and Season Five maintains an extraordinarily high level of excellence in writing, direction, and acting. Guest stars in these episodes include Luke Wilson, Richard Belzer, Darren McGavin, and even Jerry Springer. However, as always, the finest acting comes from Duchovny, Anderson, and series regular Mitch Pileggi, whose Assistant Director Skinner gradually evolved from a relatively minor supporting character to one of the principal figures in the ongoing saga.
