The X-Files gets better as it gets more complicated, a truism hammered home here in the smash series' fourth season. Originally aired in 1996-97, in the Collector's Edition the season's complete 24-show run is spread over the seven discs of the set, continuing in the format of earlier full-season collections. The show's conspiracy theories -- known to fans simply as "the mythology" -- develop deliciously, exploding in the season finale with the apparent death of one of the lead characters. After the first three ultra-successful seasons, creator/writer Chris Carter was in tune with the growing legions of "X-philes," meting out developments between lead Special Agents Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) with a master poet's control. Picking up after Season Three's tense ending, "Herrenvolk" wastes no time in furthering story lines and setting up the season, most notably the strange relationship between Smoking Man (William B. Davis) and Mulder's mother (Rebecca Toolan), and possible conspiracy theories surrounding bees, explored later in the season in "Tunguska," "Terma," and eventually on the big screen in 1998's X-Files: Fight the Future. Among the season's usual monsters, mysteries, and mythology, "Memento Mori" is a standout, revealing Scully's brain cancer and suggesting the possibility of an alien abduction in the past. "Mori" is also significant in that it originally featured a kiss between Scully and Mulder. The scene was ultimately cut from broadcast but can be found as a bonus memento in the Collector's Edition set, along with six other deleted scenes. The fourth season of The X-Files also marks a return of the celebrated writing duo Glen Morgan and James Wong (Final Destination) for the season's second installment, "Home," picked by many fans as the most grotesque, horrifying, and disturbing episode in the show's history. To call the show's fourth season a turning point may seem irrelevant, as the show marvelously turns around on itself week after week. But in Season Four Carter and his creative team firmly establish The X-Files among the most significant entries in TV history. Chas Turner
