Reporting on this briefly from the prospectus and table of contents, this new anthology of English and American poetry, old and new, promises to become a standard classic in its field -- and a possible displacement of the hitherto unchallenged Oxford anthologies may result. For the first time the narrative poets are given as full a representation as the lyric poets, Chaucer, Milton, Bryon, etc. Also for the first time ""satire and wit, humor and high spirits"" are accorded their place. Readers will find a more than satisfactory inclusion of the most familiar --the most loved; they will also find new poets, and new poems, past and present. The emphasis is, however, judicially on the past. The moderns are included, but less extensively. And the star value of the book lies obviously in the fact that English and American poetry of all time will be combined in one volume, and a lovely one.
