This book is a clear, detailed introduction to the Orthodox Church, written for the non-orthodox, as well as for Orthodox Christians who wish to know more about their own tradition. Part One describes the history of the Eastern Church over the last 2,000 years and particularly its problems in twentieth-century Russia. Part Two explains the beliefs and worship of the Orthodox today. Finally the author considers the possibilities of reunion between East and West.
During the last few years the interest of western Christians in the Orthodox Church has increased in a way that Is altogether astonishing. Timothy Ware believes that an understanding of Orthodoxy is necessary before the Roman Catholic and Protestant Churches can be reunited, and here he explains the Orthodox views on such widely ranging matters as Ecumenical Councils, Sacraments, Freewill, Purgatory, Icons, the Papacy, Protestantism, and the relation between the different Orthodox Churches.
More than ten per cent of Russia's total population attend church regularly, even after fifty years of active hostility and persecution by the state. This book answers the questions most often asked about their faith.
