SIXTEENTH TO NINETEENTH CENTURY

The Hermitage collection of English art, one of the most representative outside England, is remarkable for its great diversity. But its main value lies in its outstanding paintings and works of applied art. This volume presents a wide variety of silverware, Chelsea, Derby and Bow china, Wedgwood pottery including the famous "Green Frog" service, intaglios, among them a unique collection consisting of about 200 out of the 400 known works by Charles and William Brown, seventeenth century tapestries made at the Mort-lake factory from Raphael's cartoons, jewellery, book-bindings and glass-ware.
More than thirty paintings are reproduced including landscapes by Mor-land and Bonington, a female portrait by Gainsborough, history paintings by Reynolds and portraits by Lawrence, Raeburn and Dawe. Besides these widely known works the book presents some much more rarely reproduced pictures by Eworth and Gheeraerts, Kneller and Dobson, Wootton and Dance-Holland.
Drawings and watercolours by Cozens (there are over twenty in the Hermitage collection) and Lely, engravings by Hogarth and caricatures by Rowlandson and Gillray illustrate some other important aspects of English art.
