When Rice Havard, squire of Penavon, deliberately rides to his

Penry Vaughan, and, as they grow to manhood, the boys' ambition to
restore their inheritance takes them down differing paths.
Carne, intelligent and caring, runs away to .sea, and his experiences
on a brutal slave ship mean he returns home an older, wiser man. He
marries his childhood sweetheart, the beautiful orphan Saranne, and
becomes a colliery owner, determined to achieve the wealth that will
restore his birthright. Mostyn, charming but feckless and selfish,
insinuates himself into the employ of the new squire, and seduces
and marries the daughter and heir.
Each brother achieves his dream but it satisfies neither, and they
come into conflict time and again. When tragedy strikes. Carne
understands that his ambitions have caused him to forget all he holds
dear in life.
