Stylistycznie Swans mozna podzielic na conajmniej trzy okresy, w ktorych kazdy ma swoja perelke: Pierwszy; Industrialny 'brudny', bliski punkowej energii, niemieckiego minimalizmu i Joy Division, ktory bedzie pozniej rozwiniety przez Sonic Youth i Lydie Lunch. Albumy: 1983 Filth 1984 Cop 1986 Greed 1986 Holy Money 1987 Children of God Filth jest najblizszy halasowi i industrialnym brzmieniom. Uwaga, album tylko dla odpornych nerwowo! Cop, Greed i Holy Money to juz sa inne plyty, zdecydowanie mniej halasu a coraz wiecej hipnotycznych rytmow i dodatkowych instrumentow oraz... samplerow. Przeciwwaga sa nagrania, w ktorych spiewa Jarboe, mroczne i powolne, w wiekszosci nagrane bez uzycia perkusji. Muzycznie bliskie grupom z 4AD: Dead Can Dance i Cocteau Twins. Najwieksza perelka i prawdopodobnie najwiekszym muzycznym osiagnieciem Swans, jest plyta "Children of God". Jest to absolutne arcydzielo i swieci sie niczym najjasniejsza gwiazda na muzycznym tle lat '80 i nie tylko. Transowe rytmy, samplery, hipnotyzujace wokale Jarboe, druzgocace brzmienie gitar oraz glos jak dzwon M.Giry! Tych pare slow i tak nie odda tego co dzieje sie na tej plycie! Dla wielu jest to jedna z najwazniejszych i najlepszych plyta rocka! Drugi; Odejscie od industrialnego brzmienia w bardziej przejrzyste ale mroczniejsze klimaty, bogatsze instrumentarium i bardziej rozbudowane utwory. Albumy: 1989 The Burning World 1991 White Light from the Mouth of Infinity 1992 Love of Life 1993 Omniscience [live] Najbardziej niesamowita jest transformacja jakiej ulegl Swans nagrywajac plyte "The Burning World", producentem byl Bill Laswell, to juz jest zupelnie inny zespol. Nie ma juz tego brudnego, ciezkiego grania. Muzycznie jest blizej Leonarda Cohena (!), P.I.L. i ponownie - 4AD. Gira nie byl zadowolony z tej plyty i nastepne albumy produkowal juz sam. "White Light from the Mouth of Infinity" to rozwiniecie najlepszych wzorcow z "Children of God" i siegniecie po bogatsze instrumentarium. Ponownie, jest muzyczna perelka. Muzyka doslownie powala na kolana. Zupelnie oryginalne brzmienie, niesamowite klimaty, cudowna gitara M. Giry, liryczny glos Jarboe, uff... Podobnie jest z nastepna plyta, "Love of Life" i koncertowym "Omniscience". Nie ma na tych plytach nawet jednego slabego momentu! I tak juz bedzie do ostatniej plyty The Swans... Trzeci; Kosmiczno-socjologiczny. Najbardziej rozbudowany i dopracowany muzycznie. Tekstowa warstwa jest rownie ciekawa, demaskujaca najciemniejsze zakamarki ludzkiej egzystencji oraz degradacji amerykanskiego spoleczenstwa. Albumy: 1995 Great Annihilator 1996 Die Tur Ist Zu 1996 Soundtracks for the Blind 1998 Swans Are Dead (Live '95-'97) 1999 Various Failures 1[zasłonięte]988-19 Ostatni okres w tworczosci Swans i... najlepszy! "Children of God" byl zapowiedzia ich drugiego, bardziej rozbudowanego muzycznie okresu. Ale dopiero na "Great Annihilator" M.Gira osiagnal najbardziej perfekcyjne brzmienie, mocno edytowane i nagrywane na olbrzymich Hard Diskach komputerowych. Muzyka wielopoziomowa i przestrzenna, sporo dotatkowych odglosow puszczanych z tasm, co jeszcze poglebia i tak juz mroczne klimaty... Apogeum tworczosci The Swans byla plyta, "Soundtracks for the Blind", ktorej brudnopisem byla plyta "Die Tur Ist Zu". Charakterystyczne brzmienie akustycznej gitary na tle nieziemsko brzmiacej gitary elektrycznej, z dodatkiem innych nieokreslonych instrumentow i samplerow, tasmami, glebokim glosem M. Giry i sennymi wokalami Jarboe. Kolejna muzyczna perelka. Nagrania na tych albumach sa dluzsze niz kiedykolwiek a brzmienie krysztalowe. Fragmentami przypominaja najlepsze momenty z tworczosci niemieckiego Popol Vuh (nagranie otwierajace "Great Anihilator") i... "Ummagumma" (nagranie 'Ligeti's Breath/Hilflos Kind' z "Die Tur Ist Zu"). Szczegolnie wybijajacym sie nagraniem, jest monumentalny 'The Sound' z "Soundtracks for the Blind". W 1997 roku ukazala sie ostatnia, koncertowa plyta Swans, "Swans Are Dead". Kapitalne podsumowanie ich tworczosci i doskonala plyta, jeden z najlepszych koncertowych albumow. Koncertowe brzmienie jest rownie dobre jak studyjne, a od magii az trudno oddychac! W 1998 ukazala sie plyta z nagraniami, ktore nie zmiescily sie na plytach, lub inne wersje znanych utworow pt "Various Failures". Plyta jest muzycznym rarytasem i juz historyczna pamiatka. Niestety, byla to posmiertna plyta The Swans. Swans to juz historia. Historia wspaniala i niezapomniana. Muzyczny geniusz i arcycudowna muzyka. Swans mial duzy wplyw na grupy, ktore powstawaly w latach '90. Przykladem jest Tool i plyta "AEnima" oraz Neurosis i plyta "Times of Grace". Ale to juz, niestety, nie jest to samo... Warto tez jest zwrocic uwage na solowe poczynania Michaela Giry, Jarboe oraz ich wspolnego projektu, World of Skin. Stylistycznie sa to plyty zblizone do Swans i rownie ciekawe. Poza tym wszystkim, Michael Gira zagral (i zaspiewal) goscinnie na plycie grupy Pigface, "Notes from thee underground" w '94 roku. Najciekawszymi nagraniami na tej plycie sa oczywiscie te nagrania, na ktorych udziela sie Gira, zwlaszcza fantastyczne 'Empathy' !!!"

VARIOUS FAILURES contains material from THE BURNING WORLD, WHITE LIGHT FROM THE MOUTH OF INFINITY, LOVE OF LIFE and 10 SONGS FOR ANOTHER WORLD, a side project from longtime Gira collaborator Jarboe. Swans made their early career by crafting a series of bludgeoning albums that foretold noise rock by at least a decade. By 1988, however, the initial explosion of untamed aggression that had fueled leader Michael Gira and company had been tempered somewhat by the presence of keyboardist/vocalist Jarboe and a general creative restlessness. VARIOUS FAILURES collects highlights from several out-of-print Swans releases from the transitional period between 1988 and 1992, an epoch that saw the band expand their sound into cinematic compositions of breathtaking breadth and shimmering beauty. Songs like the glittering, expansive "Better Than You" and "Why Are We Alive?" create a palpable sense of space with dewy layers of keyboards and heavily echoed drums. In the latter half of the 90s, Swans' material saw a rebirth in the form of an extensive series of reissues via Young God Records, band leader Michael Gira's own label. Packing an incredible amount of material into two-disc sets, these reissued missives are a treasure trove of material that revitalize one of America's most impressive bands. Of these reissues, none may be more impressive than Various Failures 1[zasłonięte]988-19. During this period of time, Swans released a handful of albums that have since fallen out of print and become rather expensive collector's items. But rather than reissue these albums for whatever reason, Gira chose to personally sum up the time period on these two discs. Considering the two albums have a total running time over one hundred and fifty minutes, Various Failures is an extensive time capsule that almost fully captures this era of Swans. By 1988, Swans had begun their transformation from a dense, massive wall of sound that crushed feeble listeners into a squishy paste into a considerably more delicate and somber sound. Basing the songs on introspective lyrics, echoing acoustics and production and an entirely pensive mindframe, the songs on Various Failures are an extensive journey that will take nearly any listener through the entire gamut of emotions. Since these thirty four songs are so sprawling and full, digesting this two CD set requires quite a few dedicated listens. Once one has worked his or her way past the daunting nature of the music, Various Failures becomes the type of album that will never leave your stereo for days. Between Gira's haunting baritone voice and Jarboe's rather unusual range of voices and approaches, the CDs cover emotional ground like the IRS inspecting your tax return for a reason to audit. Unlike early material, there is little bombast, except in the emotional impact. Gira's tone often sets a very despondent mood, yet at the same time the backing music can be incredibly uplifting and intense. So many songs become highlights that both CDs are practically one major highlight. Gira must be commended for scouring his music from that era to create a two CD package that flows as one complete release, rather than a hodge-podge compilation. If nothing else, fans of goth styled music should buy this release simply to hear Jarboe's wonderfully depressing rendition of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart". Joy Division nearly sounds like They Might Be Giants with their original version. Despite the fact that some Swans fans felt the selection of songs could have been different, Various Failures is an incredible retrospect of a very creative and rich period in Swans history. It is the type of CD that can turn a casual fan into a deep believer and force listeners into an Ebay addiction to find the original out of print albums where this music was derived. Although it may take quite a bit of time to fully get one's head around due to the length and amount of music, this CD set is by far one of the most impressive releases for Swans. - John Chedsey
