- This performance of Salomé was recorded in 2007, at the Valle d’Itria Summer Festival on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the first staging.
- This is the original French version of the opera; in the 1960s the Wilde-Strauss French edition had fallen into oblivion, and music publishers no longer knew of its existence. Thanks to the Munich Richard Strauss Institute the original manuscript was finally rediscovered.
- The Irish writer Oscar Wilde wrote the play for actress Sarah Bernhardt who actually never played the role of the restless and passionate Judean princess.

- Thanks to Salome (1905) and the following Elektra (1909) Richard Strauss was hailed as the legitimate heir to Wagner because he was able to reach the modernity of a quite advanced harmonic language blended with a solid, eminently practical knowledge of theatrical ”specifics”.
- On 5th July 1905, shortly after completing Salome but before staging it, Strauss wrote to his publisher Adolph Fürstner, who was to realise the French version of the opera, translating the libretto from German and adjusting the vocal line for use with Oscar Wilde’s original French text of Salomé. The composer also sought the help of his friend Romain Rolland, because he wished to maintain Wilde’s original text and reach perfect harmony between music and words.
- The final French edition was published in 1906 and staged in a private performance in 1907 in Paris. Later in the same year it was publicly performed at Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels.
- Wilde’s original French edition was soon abandoned while other French editions, based on translations of the German text, circulated.
- To recreate the atmosphere of the libretto and respect French aesthetics, Strauss drew inspiration first and foremost from Pelléas et Mélisande by Debussy, whose influence is quite clear in the writing of Salomé.
