Nerly three decades on, is Anvil! The Story Of Anvil finally the film that finally gives This Is Spinal Tap a run for its money? Quite possibly so. The recipient of far-reaching acclaim, and with a real run for being named film of the year, this is a superb documentary, that is all the more staggering for being true.
Anvil! The Story Of Anvil follows the band of its title, a heavy metal group who enjoyed moderate success in the late 70s and early 80s, but kept going even when the light of fame and success shone elsewhere. Thus, we meet the band’s members--Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow and Robb Reiner--as they hold down day jobs, record an album and head off on a European tour that could have been taken straight out of the Spinal Tap playbook.
As Anvil! The Story Of Anvil develops, though, there’s a drama at the heart of it that mixes in with the many frequent laughs. And, as it turns out, it’s a film that out of nowhere manages to move you, pretty much the last thing you expect of it.
This is, and there’s no two ways about it, a quite brilliant film, and one of the very best documentaries in some time. It’s outrageously entertaining, very funny and yet human to the core. Anvil! The Story Of Anvil is going to take some beating, and don’t be surprised if it’s another three decades before anything else comes close to it and This Is Spinal Tap… -
In 1981, Canadian heavy metal band Anvil released their first album, Hard 'n' Heavy, which earned them a potent reputation among discerning headbangers and established them as one of the pioneering acts of the speed metal movement. Anvil had a loyal following in their native Canada and they shared stages with some of the biggest names in heavy rock, but the lucky break that would have elevated them to real stardom never came, and legal troubles helped to derail the group's career in the mid-'80s. Years later, the likes of Metallica and Slayer would cite Anvil as a key influence, but lead vocalist Steve "Lips" Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner struggled to keep the band alive, recording new material for tiny independent labels and trying to organize club tours as they juggled day jobs, families, and adult responsibilities. Documentary filmmaker Sacha Gervasi follows Kudlow and Reiner as they struggle to keep their ambitions alive despite 35 years of missing the brass ring in Anvil! The True Story of Anvil, which paints a sympathetic but warts-and-all portrait of the unexpected consequences of the rock & roll dream. Anvil! received its American premiere at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.
The extras are replete with everything an Anvil! fan could hope for. The commentary by Gervasi, Kudlow and Reiner is almost as entertaining as the movie itself, as the guys prove to be just as lively and down-to-earth when talking about the making of the picture. The deleted scenes are also engaging, offering up a few extra tidbits (more on Lips’ catering gig!). And finally, perhaps the most insightful supplemental on the bonus features is Lars Ulrich’s extended interview, which further impresses upon the audience the tremendous influence and inspiration Anvil provided for some of the most gargantuan bands of their time.
