MEDALLION: 1900 South African Campaign Peace Medal, official 52 mm bronze issue (first version), designed by Emil Fuchs - excellent condition (my ref. 164.105)
I researched this medallion. On the medallion the dates are “South African Campaign 1899 1900” and this is the first version of this Peace medal issued during the campaign. The war did not officially end until 1902 and there is a second version of the medal dated 1[zasłonięte]899 19. This may have happened because the British assumed that after Pretoria was annexed they had won. In fact, although the British regained control in 1900, the Boers continued a guerrilla war which involved disrupting the flow of supplies and communications; they also mounted raids on the occupying army. This was eventually stopped by the British after they initiated the “scorched earth” policy which involved the burning down of 30,000 farms. The British also needed to restrict the Boers’ movements which caused 3,700 miles of wire fencing to be put up, to be guarded by 50,000 troops. These factors forced the Boers to negotiate and brought an end to the war. These medallions were apparently sold to the public from normal high street shops; in South Africa, for example, it was branches of the Myers Brothers that sold them. There are official versions issued in gold, silver and bronze in different sizes: 70, 52 and 44 mm. This is the official 52 mm bronze issue of the first version designed by Emil Fuchs (an Austrian who worked for many years in London, before moving to the USA).
