It’s a disappointment that
Stargate Universe has come to an end with its second season. The third major series to spin out of the original
Stargate movie, the show arrived in the midst of a testing time for science fiction television, and with ideas of doing something a little different, the ratings, sadly, meant its run was set to be a very finite one.
Fortunately, there’s plenty that the show managed to put on screen in its short lifespan that makes it worth checking out. And Stargate Universe’s second season ensures it goes out with some style.
We find, this time around, the Destiny in increasing trouble, with supplies short on the ground, and a crew whose relationships continue to bristle. Granted, this is all nothing new. But Stargate Universe’s writing takes the show off in directions you might not be expecting. It’s certainly willing to take its chances, and as such, maybe that’s what’s left some people cold. It’s a pity, though--Stargate Universe is ambitious science fiction television, with a quality cast and strong execution. One or two episodes don’t quite measure up, but that’s a small price to pay in this instance.
This is a show very much worth discovering, if you haven’t already.
