Season 1 of Stargate: Atlantis left the scientists and military personnel who had been stationed in the city of Atlantis in a precarious state. After discovering the mythological lost city and settling in to explore its secrets, the group found themselves face to face with a violent race called the Wraith. After perpetrating smaller attacks, the Wraith finally launch a giant assault against the city, and by Season 1's finale all hell is breaking loose: Teyla (Rachel Luttrell) is assumed dead after her squad is attacked; Ford (Rainbow Francks) and his Marines have been surrounded by the Wraith; Sheppard (Joe Flanigan) decides the only way to save the city is to fly a suicide mission; and Weir (Torri Higginson) and McKay (David Hewlett) start the self-destruct sequence to destroy the city. Season 2 picks up with Part 3 of "The Siege," as Colonel Steven Caldwell (The X-Files' Mitch Pileggi, who has a recurring role this season) of the Earth warship Daedalus swoops in to save the day. Teyla survives and the self-destruct sequence is canceled, but Ford is attacked by the Wraith. His strange transformation as a result of the attack features prominently in the pivotal episodes "The Runner," "The Lost Boys," and "The Hive." A new character is introduced in Season 2 as well: Ronon Dex (Jason Momoa), a survivor of a Wraith attack from another planet, who eventually becomes a permanent member of the Atlantis team. Finally, the episode "Michael" and the season finale, "Allies," introduce a disturbing new Wraith-human hybrid, created by Atlantis scientists. A Wraith faction, seeking peace, offers to trade technology for information about the hybrids. Not everything goes as planned, however, and the season ends on a cliffhanger when McKay and Dex are captured and held on board a Wraith ship headed for Earth. Christina Urban
