Walk 1 Birch Tor and Vitifer Mines Start: On the B3212 east of the Warren House Inn Distance: 1.75 miles (2.8km) Time: 1 hour Parking: Bennett's Cross car park (free) Route Features: Narrow moorland path to Birch Tor; short clamber out of heathery gully towards end of walk. Keep a close eye on dogs and children during the closing stages of the walk. Public Transport: Bus service from Exeter (via Moretonhamostead) and Plymouth Refreshments: Warren House Inn just south west of the car park Before you set out on this walk take a look at Bennett's Cross, just above the car park. This simple granite cross is named after a 16th-century miner. It is also on the line of the ancient track across the moor, followed today by the modern road, which dates from the late 18th century. Once at the cross, turn away from the road and walk towards the moor to meet a clear path (Two Moors Way) coming in from the right. Bear left and follow the path unphill. At the crest of the hill turn right by a stone cairn and take the narrow path that winds through the heather to gain the farthest outcrop of Birch Tor, from which there are wonderful views of Grimspound and Hamel Down across teh Challacombe valley to the left, and over the mine workings at Vitifer to the right.
