Gottlieb Daimler’s First Automobile (March 8, 1886)
In 1885, Gottlieb Daimler (1[zasłonięte]834-19), together with his partner Wilhelm Maybach (1[zasłonięte]846-19), adapted an early model of the internal combustion engine and patented what is generally recognized as the prototype of the modern gas engine. The 1885 Daimler-Maybach engine was small and lightweight, and before the year was out it had been put to use in the first motorcycle and the first motorboat. On March 8, 1886, Daimler took a stagecoach (made by Wilhelm Wimpff & Son) and adapted it so that it could hold his engine. In the process, he ended up designing the world’s first four-wheeled automobile, shown here. It was capable of a top speed of 18 kilometers per hour. In 1890, Daimler founded the Daimler Motor Company in Cannstatt, near Stuttgart, to mass-produce his designs. In 1899, Daimler asked Maybach to design a racing car, which was given the name “Mercedes.”
Durea - On September 20, 1893, the Duryea Brothers road-tested the first-ever, working American gasoline-powered automobile in a portion of Springfield, Massachusetts that is now located in the City of Chicopee, Massachusetts. The Duryea's "motor wagon" was a used horse drawn buggy that the brothers had purchased for $70 and into which they had installed a 4 HP, single cylinder gasoline engine. The car (buggy) had a friction transmission, spray carburetor and low tension ignition.[2] Frank Duryea test drove it again on November 10 — this time in a prominent location: past their garage at 47 Taylor Street in Springfield. The next day it was reported by The Republican newspaper with great fanfare.
This particular car was put into storage in 1894 and stayed there until 1920, when it was rescued by a former Duryea engineer Inglis M. Uppercu[3] and presented to the United States National Museum.[2]
Schirnding Porzellan AG
In the year 1901 Lorenz Reichel opened, in the small Bavarian-Bohemian border town with 600 habitants, a workshop for china painting. Three years later he began the production of his own white china. Six modern circular kilns, an electrical illumination and a company-owned railway construction indicate in the year 1906 a modern management. In 1909 the company chaired by councillor of commerce Martin Zehendner (Mitterteich) was converted into a public limited company (Schirnding Porzellan AG). In 1927 Zehender handed his share majority over to the two factory owners Wilhelm und Heinrich Seltmann from Weiden - under their direction the company prospered.
Heinrich und Dieter Seltmann
After the Second World War the rapid advancement of the company was above all the achievement of Heinrich Seltmann (1[zasłonięte]899-19). Technical innovations and a foresighted operative market orientation ensured the economic boom. Since the middle of the sixties also his son Dieter Seltmann (*1938) set a trend-setting course in the company. From 1991 the china factory Schirnding AG has supported a close cooperation with the English Royal Stafford China Ltd. (Stoke-on-Trent), in the field of Bone-China-Ware.
Arzberg-Porzellan GmbH
The crises of the nineties pushed the china factory Schirnding AG into a merger with J. Kronester GmbH (Schwarzenbach a. d. Saale) and Johann Seltmann GmbH (Vohenstrauß) in the year 1993. The newly established SKV-Porzellan-Union GmbH managed the market positioning. In August 2000 the company could purchase the tradition rich design label „Arzberg“ (the known designer Dr. Hermann Gretsch (1895 – 1950) published the award-winning Form 1382 in the twenties) out of the insolvency assets of the Winterling AG (Kirchenlamitz).Since June 2004 the company from Schirnding has traded under the name Arzberg-Porzellan GmbH. The brand „Schirnding“ epitomizes modern and traditional tableware.
