Progress of civilisation,
industrialisation of the country, development of the automotive industry,
automation of everyday life and stress resulting from “fast pace of life” more
and more frequently cause an increase in patients with acute conditions who
require quick medical help. From epidemiological studies, it results that among
the causes of sudden death cases, acute cardiovascular condi¬tions are on the
first place, next to malignant neoplasms, traumas and severe, multiorgan body
injuries. Providing qualified, pre-hospital help to these persons in the first
stage depends on medical rescue teams.
Emergency medicine and medical
rescue are new directions in the develop¬ment of medical sciences established
due to the need to provide first-aid and rescue life of persons who are in the
situations of sudden deterioration and life- threatening situations in which
instant circulatory arrest and bodily injuries are the main percentage of rescue
interventions. Coming to aid in life-threatening situations is a statutory
obligation of every citizen, therefore, pro-health educa¬tion of civilians is
needed and necessary. Doctors, nurses and in the last decade paramedics
constitute a professional group, which apart from saving life and providing
first-aid in emergencies, is also required to conduct pro-health educa¬tion and
train citizens in the field of providing first-aid.
Professionally
trained paramedics, previously educated in the system of postsecondary school
education or postsecondary school examination education, joined emergency teams
which until recently consisted exclusively of doctors, nurses and so-called
ambulance officers. In the last decade, pursuant to Medical Rescue Act which
changed the current regulations of Ministry of Health and Ministry of Science
and Higher Education in regard to education of paramedics, the education takes
place in the course of bachelor’s studies and higher schools. In the hierarchy
of medical professions, a paramedic was granted new legal au¬thorisations, a new
professional position, new competences and rights in the system of medical
rescue. A certified paramedic as a graduate of bachelor’s studies may and should
continue education on master’s studies. Every day, pro¬gress in medical sciences
brings new discoveries, new diagnostic and treatment methods, therefore, the
need for self-education and training on specialist courses became a necessity in
medical professions. Paramedic trainings and improving professional
qualifications, similarly to doctors, can take place as part of special¬ist
courses, workshops, conferences and symposia as well as professional meet¬ings.
Conferences, symposia and trainings in the field of medical rescue and paramedic
medicine are held periodically in our country and abroad. The First
Sub-Carpathian Medical Rescue Conference organized on 13th October 2011 in
Rzeszow joined the group of reputable and renowned conferences and trainings.
Selected issues of medical rescue were presented during the conference. This
monograph, presently published, is an outcome of this meeting. The monograph is
a collection of works whose authors are mainly employees of Chair of Medi¬cal
Rescue of University of Rzeszow who presented the current issues of rescue
medicine which may be encountered by paramedics in their everyday practice. The
presented issues may be used both in pre-graduate training, and in continu¬ous
postgraduate training of paramedics.
