Product Description Review Run Like an Athlete amounts to 180 pages and takes the reader through the often neglected aspect of running biomechanics. The 10 chapters delve into all the things that can make you a better and more efficient runner and the early pages go into the science in an easily understood way with many fine illustrations. Interestingly, it devotes much space to soft-tissue mobility and how to improve tissues that get stuck. Runners are effectively running on springs and improving these can make a huge difference to performance, including speed and efficiency, and it describes at length how to make muscles smarter and stronger. It contains clearly demonstrated corrective exercises. The book is without doubt an excellent resource on running biomechanics and injury prevention. The corrective exercises can and should become part of a structured training routine to improve performance and also reduce injuries. --David Lowe, Athletics Weekly magazineIt's a confusing time for runners. We're inundated with conflicting information about running technique, shoes and injury prevention; coming at us from all angles. Thankfully this new book recently published in the UK (published as Anatomy for Runners in the US), aims to cut through the confusion and provide us with some clear facts, evidence based advice and finally a sensible approach to running and injury prevention. Many authors claim to be experts in running technique and biomechanics, but Jay really does know his stuff. He currently holds the position as Director of the SPEED performance clinic at the University of Virginia and has a masters in Physical Therapy. He is a sought after presenter and coach and is passionate about helping runners avoid injury and run faster and more efficiently. Whether you're a beginner, seasoned competitor or coach, this book will help you understand running biomechanics in a simple way, what causes injury and how to build a good foundation on which to develop your running. You will learn how to identify where your weaknesses lie - with a series of self evaluation tests - and also how to correct them with innovative strength and mobility exercises and tips on running form. Written in a down to earth and lively fashion but with a strong evidence based scientific foundation. If you're looking for a quick fix, this book isn't for you. If however, you're looking for a long term approach to help you run faster, with less injury and more efficiently then this is probably the best book on the subject to hit our shelves for some years, if not ever. --Sarah Russell, Running Fitness magazine, April 2014Run Like an Athlete amounts to 180 pages and takes the reader through the often neglected aspect of running biomechanics.
