My Neighbours The Yamadas [DVD] (DVD);Everything that studio ghibli touches turns to gold. They have triumphed in every ambitious project that they have ever embarked upon and this is no different. The film portrays an ordinary family in a comic way, but is also very endearing. It is so easy to relate to the characters and although some of the humour may be lost on a western audience there are many scenes which are truly entertaining and amusing. The finale of the film is wonderful to watch, and the it is a nice touch that the film ends in a disagreement between the family rather than the happy sing-a-long. The film is essentially a series of sketches about a family brought to life in a wonderful water colour style. It doesnt have the substance of Princess Mononoke or Grave of the Fireflies, but it is a still worthy of a watch. Another wonderful production from the superb studio ghibli and Isao Takahata.
