Richard Kern: New York Girls. Photographs by Richard Kern. Introduction by Lydia Lunch. Purr, New York, 1996. 240 pp., 106 black-and-white and 106 color illustrations, 9x11½". Richard Kern got his start in the early 1980s when he moved to New York and began making Super-8 films that explored his friends' darkest fantasies, phobias, fetishes, and desires. Featuring figures such as Lydia Lunch, Sonic Youth, and Henry Rollins, the films were hugely popular in some circles and heavily controversial in others--intentional sleaze-fests such as Fingered built Kern's infamous reputation. This book is a collection of Kern's nude portraits of friends--bizarre fulfillments of their obsessions, and powerful commentary on the sexual politics of the present day.

One of the most transgressive of American photographers, Richard Kern makes brazen portraits of enticing nude women. But if his photographs easily cross over into the world of pornography, they are distinguished from prosaic porn by their beauty and, more importantly, their treatment of voyeurism as a theme. As Kern once said, "The best part of anything is watching," and through his photographs, he not only seduces the viewer into looking but forces a subsequent recognition of his or her own voyeurism. This publication presents a new series of black and white photographs.
