Piranha 3D [DVD] (DVD);I can only imagine the amount of 1 star ratings is due to people not getting it. Perhaps it is marked down for the 3D, I saw it in 3D in the cinema and it was decent enough, but I have only seen the home movie in 2D, and it is the movie I am writing a review about.;Piranha 3D is probably the best commercial horror film of last year. It is trashy, B-movie fair with a decent budget, a film that revels in its own silliness and is probably one of the most gloriously OTT films I have seen in some time.;The plot is simple. Earth tremor opens a crack in the riverbed of a small American town, which joins to an underground lake separated from the surface for thousands of years. Lake has been harbouring prehistoric piranha, which are unleashed onto an unsuspecting throng of revellers on spring break. Chaos ensues.;That is all you need to know. The plot is not important. What is important is the whole cast (including some great cameos) giving their all in the midst of an explosion of gratuitous gore and nudity. There are no meandering parts, no fleshing out of multifaceted characters, this is pure entertainment. Everyone is potential fish food, and the climax to the film, which I wont ruin for anyone, is one of my movie highlights from last year (I am a bit of a gorehound!).;So, if you are looking for an intelligent, thought provoking horror, forget it. Move along. If however you want to crack open a few beers and watch obnoxious meatheads leer and scantily clad women jiggle about a bit before they all get gnawed to death in gratuitous, bloody style by a hungry pack of prehistoric fish, this is the film for you!;Its stupid, its as subtle as a brick, its gory as hell and it wears its colours proudly. It is absolutely outrageous fun from start to finish, and I cant imagine you will have a better time with a film all year.;Take the plunge!
