NOTICE
A summary of the Plastic Arts in 1966 touching on all the personages
in the great adventure of contemporary painting and sculpture, may seem quite a presumptuous undertaking in the frame of a work such as this. And yet that is the task to which the collaborators of REPERTORIUM ARTIS have been devoting themselves for more than three years, gathering together and classifying countless notes, articles and documents that they receive from the four corners of Europe. Of course, abundant literature now exists on everything closely or remotely involved with the Fine Arts, since presentday trends continue to cause quite a stir.
As it takes many more years to judge works exactly, we have not attempted to analyse or evaluate. The only ambition of this volume is to offer, in the form of a directory, a summary of the personality and works of the numerous artists now living in Europe. In the same spirit of objectivity, the artists have been allowed great jreedom in the composition, and that explains the variety in the way the pages are presented.
As we were jorced to limit the contents oj REVERTORIUM ARTIS in space as well as in time, we have restricted our compendium to Europe and we have dealt only ivith living artists. To that corresponds our desire for precision and each address and piece of information was cautiously checked before publication. If gaps do appear, which is possible, if not probable, we have no less the certainty of having accomplished our task with the greatest amount of care.
Although the section devoted to artists, painters and sculptors is the largest and most important because of the value of its contents, we wished to supplement this volume with the results of the public sales of modern art works in 196], a list of collectors throughout the world and the leading art galleries of Europe. We hope thus to increase the interest offered by REPERTORIUM ARTIS, to the greater benefit of all those who appear in it.
We wish to thank all those whose collaboration made this work possible, as well as the numerous people who kindly furnished us with information to complete our documentation.
The Editor.
