PART I
Rocket missiles were used by the Chinese against the Tartars in the battle of Pień King in the year 1232; These first military missiles were quite inaccurate and had little effect other than causing much confusion among the Tartars. Today the U. S. Navy Sidewinder missile can detect an enemy airplane at a dis-tance of seven miles, chase it down at twice the speed of sound, and make a direct hit in spite of any evasive action,
The Chinese who fired the first rockets had no hopes that these missiles could reach the moon or launch a man-made moon which would circle the earth. Today, our missiles have already launched a number of artificial moons around the earth. By the time you read this a rocket may have already reached the moon and a raan may have successfully travelled through space,
Missiles, satellites and space ships have an important place in todayłs world. Missiles provide a powerful and necessary weapon for national defense. In addition, the steady improve-ment in missiles has given us a way to reach the moon and fo explore space. These goals have not been set up to show that we can accomplish something that is extremely difficult. We must increase our knowledge about space if we are to survive and continue to make progress.
Thousands of high school students are busily building and flying rockets under expert guidance. Many others are reading every book and magazine article they can find on this subject. This book is intended for high school students and is designed to introduce them to missiles, satellites and space travel. It includes all of the information reąuired to give them a solid foundation in these subjects and is profusely illustrated to help accomplish this purpose.
Part I tells about missiles—their airframes, propulsion sys-tems, military nosecones, and guidance systems. At the end of Part I is a directory which describes and illustrates different missiles used by the Armed Service.
Part II tells about satellites—how they are launched, how they stay in orbit, and how they transmit scientific information back to earth. The last two chapters review the outstanding facts about space travel—why we want to send men to the moon and other planets and what we are doing to accompiish this.
