Bestialska Profanacja wszystkiego co święte,  surowe, archaiczne brzmienie w starym barbarzyńskim stylu 666

When Paul Ledney and co. decided to leave Incantation and create Profanatica, they brought with them the talent and vision needed to create the worlds filthiest, most repulsive, and most blasphemous metal band known to man. Beginning with the overtly anti-Christian “Putrescence Of…” in 1990, Ledney and his cohorts left behind a trail of down-tuned, almost death metal-like guitar work, inverted crosses, bleeding anuses, gargling shrieks, bodily fluids, and exposed penises. With these ingredients in hand, Profanatica forged a unique sound and style that have been rivaled by few and matched by no one.

What makes their 2010 release, “Disgusting Blasphemies Against God” stand out on it’s own? Perhaps it’s the title, which should leave nothing to the imagination as to what the subject matter deals with. Maybe it’s the always grotesque and sometimes hilarious song titles (Christ’s Precious Blood Poisoned, Covered In Black Shit, Angel With Cock), which have become even more outlandish than song titles of the past. However, the strongest indication that DBAG is Profanatica’s best work to date is that it takes their usual formula and channels it to greater heights. Many typical black metal conventions (atmosphere, melody, garage-like production) are thrown out the window in exchange for a metallic assault that will rape the ears and send any Christians in the vicinity fleeing in terror.

The most obvious thing that the listener will notice is that the driving force behind the album is not the guitar or the drum, but the bass (!!!). Far too often in black metal the bass is left close to inaudible, but on this release, it takes front and center as a strong rhythm monster. Even more impressive is that the bass, while played with ferocity and conviction, does nothing to reduce the impact of the guitar and drums played brilliantly by John Gelso and Ledney, respectively. The greatly improved production from 2007’s “Profanatitas De Domonatia” actually makes the music much darker and more menacing, a feat that will be sure to have lo-fi purists breathing sighs of relief.

The music itself is pure Profanatica. The basic formula of dark and sinister black metal has not changed one bit; the riffs are minimalist and somewhat unoriginal, but still retain the ability to sound fresh and invigorating. Not a single melodic note has managed to penetrate the oppressive wall of sound. Melody, ambiance, complexity, and nuance seem not to be words in the band’s vocabulary, and for that we should all be grateful. Ledney’s vocals have always been an anomaly in the genre, as he sings with a somewhat deeper and more disgusting (pun not intended) style than the typical tortured banshee shrieks of most black metal vocalists and because of it makes the band stand out even more. DBAG is no exception, he sounds better than ever.

The only possible flaw (if it can be called a flaw) that can be found is the lack of variety between the songs. Each and every song follows the exact same blueprint to the letter and guitar solos are nonexistent. So, if you’re looking for something original and new look elsewhere as the sole purpose of this album is not to impress, but to destroy. The lack of variation may be boring to some, but with riffs as good as these there shouldn’t be very many complainers.
