Pierwsze jazzowe nagranie "amerykańskiej opery ludowej" George Gershwina, dokonane w 1956 roku przez orkiestrę Duke Ellingtona, Australian Jazz Quintet i Stan Levey Group. W role tytułowej pary wcielili się Mel Torme i Francis Faye, a wśród solistów także Johnny Hartman, Betty Roche, George Kirby, Sallie Blair, Frank Rosolino, Loulie Jean Norman, Joe Derise, Bob Dorough i Pat Moran Quartet. Przygotowane z dużym rozmachem, było potem wielokrotnie wznawiane i stanowi punkt odniesienia dla późniejszych jazzowych interpretacji utworów z "Porgy & Bess" nagranych m.in. przez Luisa Armstronga z Ellą Fitzgerald, Milesa Davisa z Gilem Evansem czy Ray'a Charlesa z Cleo Laine.
