Autor stara się wyjaśnić przyczynę zróżnicowania nagłosowych grup spółgłoskowych w języku angielskim i polskim z odniesieniami do języka czeskiego, niemieckiego i galoromańskiego w modelu minimalnego szablonu sylaby. Analizuje on procesy fonologiczne, które swoim zasięgiem obejmują sonanty. W języku polskim są to: zbitki spółgłoskowe, w których pojawiają się tzw. uwięzione sonanty, a także zjawisko rozbicia wargowych spółgłosek miękkich na dwa segmenty i ich dalszy rozwój w dialekcie kurpiowskim. W języku angielskim poddano analizie spółgłoski zgłoskotwórcze i zjawisko synkopy samogłoskowej.
