OPOWIEŚCI KANTERBERYJSKIE
Nagrodzona Złotym Niedźwiedziem na festiwalu w Berlinie, druga część "trylogii życia" Pasoliniego. Film powstał w oparciu o poemat Chaucera. Cykl opowieści, których ramę stanowi pielgrzymka przedstawicieli różnych stanów do grobu św. Tomasza w Canterbury. Każdy z pielgrzymów w czasie wędrówki ma za zadanie opowiedzieć jakąś historię. W sposób barwny, pełen erotyki i humoru opowieści te ukazują obraz społeczeństwa, obyczajów i kultury europejskiej XIV wieku. W rolę Chaucera, podróżującego wraz z pielgrzymami do grobu wcielił się sam reżyser
Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini's film of The Canterbury Tales was one of a trilogy from the early 1970s that, like its companions The Decameron and the Arabian Nights, was an international box-office hit playing for long runs in mainstream cinemas. All of them adapt a masterpiece of literature where man becomes the moral catalyst for his own destiny. Chaucer's ribald sense of humour was a natural outlet for Pasolini's own desire to throw caution to the wind on screen, causing controversy at the time by displaying all facets of the male and female body unadorned. (Although it all looks pretty tame now, the Italian authorities were a threatening presence to Pasolini at the time.) Produced by Alberto Grimaldi with a large budget, the location scenes were filmed in many historic sites in England, notably Wells Cathedral, its crypt, and the surrounding flatlands leading toward Glastonbury, captured in early spring by Tonino Delli Colli's cinematography. The cast with Italian and English actors dubbed into Italian with English subtitles is a mixed blessing. Hugh Griffith as Sir January is one Anglo-Saxon recognisable from his role as the lecherous squire in Tom Jones, and overacts like the rest of the cast. Pasolini himself appears briefly as Chaucer in a non-speaking role that one regrets he didn't enlarge for himself in this sprawling tableaux of pilgrim's tales (Ken Russell's excesses from the same period come to mind). The musical score, an adaptation by Ennio Morricone of some traditional indigenous melodies, prefigures the early music revival by a few years and provides a stimulating soundtrack. --Adrian Edwards
Pier Paolo Pasolini, is certainly one of Italys most talented, and controvercial film makers. It is believed by some, that the government led a conspiracy to kill Pasolini. After his filming the epic, and disturbing, look at fascism, entitled: Salo: 120 Days Of Sodom. This film was the 2nd in the "Trilogy Of Life", Pasolinis infamously bawdy trilogy. Pasolini interpereted, that masters for his trilogy, for the Decameron, it is Bocaccio, for Arabian Nights, it is many great authors, and for this film it is Geofferey Chaucer. Like the other 2 installments in this trilogy, this movie is filmed with an elegance and grace, that is not seen in the Film industry of today. Shot on high-grain stock, and filled with vibrant colors and atmosphere, this film is truly a visual treat for your eyes. Pasolini takes Chaucers own tales, and adds some of his signature touches to the way that the stories are told. Pasolini even takes on the role of Chaucer himself. Chaucer would be proud of this output, even though it can be noted that, Pasolini took some artistic liscence with the tales of Canterbury. These manipulations, do not, however, detract from this piece. Instead they add to it. This is such a beautiful piece of work, that hold up throughout the years. It really looks as good today, as it did in the early 70s....Do yourself a favour, take a day off of work, dim the lights in your home, and rent the "trilogy of life" on DVD. You will never be the same again....
The second part of Pasolini's Trilogy of Life plunges with gusto into dark and bawdy tales which celebrate almost every conceivable form of sexual act with a rich, earthy humour. Pasolini himself has a cameo appearance in this playful film, presented here in a new High-Definition restoration.
