In 1971, when the Italian Government purchased the Paganini autograph scores and finally made them accessible to scholars from all over the world, we finally discovered that the Genoese violinist’s production for the guitar was far richer and more organic than had previously been supposed. Paganini wrote the 43 Ghiribizzi in Naples about 1820, probably to please some young client. The occasional, carefree character of these compositions is clearly stated in the title Ghiribizzi [Whimsical Trifles], intended especially in the sense of little compositions of no great importance, of free and witty character, rather than in the sense of ”capricci”, even in miniature format. All the Ghiribizzi denote the climate of relaxed creativity in which they were conceived; they are not, and probably do not seek to be, anything other than pleasant miniatures, destined for a young guitarist of limited experience. Yet, though they are generally works that are easy to perform, they are always rich in simple, elegant melodies, and do not eschew a varied, ample use of the fingerboard. The fortune they enjoy among guitarists has soon made them classical additions to the repertoire, and a fine illustration of the fact that a production with relatively modest technical demands may still reveal first-class musical contents.
