Capsule first presented Oxbow (full band) in the upstairs of a small, sweaty pub in Birmingham July 2003 shortly after presenting their first Supersonic Festival. It was both a fascinating and frightening experience but one that has developed into a long and fruitful relationship, resulting in performances at Birmingham strip clubs, riots in Texas and this unique collaboration recorded live at Supersonic Festival 2007. “Creating a huge arc of slow building then dissolving drone music has fascinated me since long before Oxbow recorded Glimmer on An Evil Heat. “You Pay First” was expressly composed for this performance and recording. Not Oxbow. Eugene and me in suits. Him singing, me on acoustic guitar in a month-old Marks and Spencer 200 quid dark-blue model, white handkerchief stuffed in breast pocket, custom-made white shirt, and a 75-cent maroon tie from The Salvation Army store in Lincoln, Nebraska. The handkerchief for blowin’ not for showin’, came in handy when some zealous lug in the front row spurt beer like a fountain while we were playing “Yoke.” That song is not included here; I had to stop to dab the sticky residue that covered my guitar, face, and hands. Sure, I’ll break my electric guitars on stage but you do not fuck with my beloved Martin D-18. A string quartet proved impossible to find, happily Chipper agreed to play cello, and Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Jesu) and Stephen O’Malley (Sunn O)))) on electric guitars and Dave Cochrane (Head of David, Transitional) on bass, signed up too. An orchestra: “Love’s Holiday Orchestra.” Stephen, Justin, Dave, Chipper and I met briefly backstage to go over the contour of “You Pay First;” Chipper spent a few minutes with me playing through the harmonic areas I had mapped on guitar.
