"Gordon Bennett is generally acknowledged as one of the most significant Australian artist. From his earliest work onwards he was widely acclaimed by critics and art theoreticians for his art in which the personal, the aesthetic and the political meet. 
Bennett's work is informed by memory and personal experience, and yet transcends the personal and emotional to go into the area of postmodern concerns and postcolonial discourses. His intensely rich and diversified
oeuvre cannot easily be described or pinned down to one interpretation. In his deconstruction of dominant Eurocentric narratives of the colonisation of Australia, Bennett quotes and samples popular imagery as well as the work of several European and American artists.
In the Home Decor series, for instance, Gordon Bennett appropriates the Aboriginal figures of Australian modernist Margaret Preston and the grid of Mondrian to create a new language in which (art)history is reassessed. In his Notes to Basquiat series, Bennett directly engages with the graffiti-style of painting of the African-American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat to explore affinites to their work.
Outsider/Insider gives a selected overview of the oeuvre of Gordon Bennett, covering his early work from the late 1980s until his most recent work. The exhibitionvand this publication explore 'abstraction' and 'appropriation' as recurring strategies in the image-making of Bennett's formal language."
