Gau Kurmark was in transition when this event at Guben took place; that region of Prussia had previously been named Gau Ostmark until 1933, and in August of 1936 it was conflated with Gau Brandenburg and changed its name again, this time to Gau Mark Brandenburg. This last change was linked to the fall from grace of the former Gauleiter of Ostmark and then of Kurmark, Wilhelm Kube, who was brought before the Chief Justice of the Supreme Party Court, Reichsleiter Walter Buch, on charges of blackmail, seduction of colleagues’ wives, and embezzlement, of which he was found guilty and removed from all of his positions and responsibilities. Prussian politician Emil Stürtz was awarded leadership of the new region as Gauleiter of Mark Brandenburg, while the last Gauleiter of Brandenburg, Ernst Schlange, lost his office to Joseph Goebbels as the Little Doctor gobbled up part of his territory and united it with his own as Gauleiter of Berlin.
