MT SIMS "A Grave" 12'' EP-LP

Mount Sims (także Mt. Sims) to sceniczny pseudonim Matthew Sims, zamieszkującego w Berlinie Amerykańskiego DJ'a/artysty/producenta/twórcy. Rozpoczął karierę jako wokalista zespołu Citizen King. Po rozpadnięciu się zespołu, jego początkowa praca związana była z muzyką elektroniczną, zawierającą też takie style jak post punk, new wave, techno i darkwave. Sims był prawie całkowicie odpowiedzialny za każdy element jego muzyki, uwzględniając wokale, instrumenty i produkcję. Obecnie zespół Mount Sims, oprócz Matthew Simsa składa się jeszcze z dwóch członków, basisty Rand Twigg i perkusisty Andre Lange.

Jego pierwszy album, "UltraSex" (2002 / International DeeJay Gigolo Records), Emperor Norton records był bardzo dobrze przyjęty w klubach. Głównie na pracę DJ'a wpłynęły Niemieckie i Brytyjskie zespoły New Wave, funk i muzyka elektroniczna. Był to pomysł albumu skupionego na tematach technologii i seksualności. Album zawiera piosenki "How We Do" i "Rational Behaviour."

Drugi album Mount Sims "Wild Light" (2005 / International DeeJay Gigolo), jest o wiele ciemniejszy niż poprzedni, głównie skupiony na tematach śmierci i informacji. Główne wpływy muzyczne przewijające się przez album to style darkwave i post punk. W niektórych piosenkach na basie zagrał David J. Bauhaus wraz z wkładem syntezatorskim Rogera Manning Jr. Najbardziej popularne piosenki to "No Yellow lines" i "Lights on".

Mount Sims jest odpowiedzialny za remixy piosenki Madonny "Nobody Knows Me", z jej albumu American Life (2003). W piosence skompresował czas mowy Charlesa Mansona, w celu skonstruowania innej elektronicznej perkusji, którą następnie zawarł w remixie.

Tak jak "Wild Light", trzeci album Mt. Sims "Happily Ever After" (2008 / Hungry Eye Records), jest stworzony z tematów które dotykają ciemniejszej strony ludzkiej natury: Obsesja, izolacja, horror i złość. Był wyprodukowany przez Thomasa Sterna z Crime i przez City Solution, oraz zaproszonych gości, takich jak Jessie Evans (dokładniej w Subtonix, Autonervous i The Vanishing), Toby Dammit (The Swans, Tje Residents i Iggy Pop) i Bryan Black (Motor). Design albumu jest to praca Petera Wu, wraz z layoutem stworzonym przez Dez z CROSSOVER i fotografiami Echo Danona.



New Wave / Experimental / Synthpop / Electro / Dub

Lately we have come witnessing a return to old tendencies and a reincorporation of genres in the new old underground music artistic/business realm. Old style New waves, electro, synth pop amongst other genres have made their reappearance... This generation of self deluded jingoists, bastardized individualists and simply madmen are slowly returning to their roots, the post punk age with its legendary legacy is at hand. Reminder of the fact that the epochs with his characters and feelings return, finding a way to be relevant and influential once more in our present time. Mt Sims returns to the past with style! That seems to be the watchword at least by following the mood of this epoch and adding an ordeal of new sound technologies and sounds to the classic genres.

The EP in question it is indeed “A grave” filled with the bones of New wave imbued with it’s more dark approach, strong post punk rhythms and lyricism, bouncing between chemical euphoria and depression then to frantic and often crazy electronica twists, managing to redeem coldness and warmness in a whole piece together. Is it a contradiction? Not at all! They are absolute masters dealing with beasts and 80’s bizarre virtues.

Their coherence and mastership in the handling of the tempo cadence, the synchronization of the synthesizers and analog sequencers with the catchy effectiveness of the rhythms, clearly gives an idea that this is not a newbie and that is a real professional that certainly knows how to compromise the attention of the listener entirely at his disposition.

Matt Sims, the genious behind Mt Sims is not a beginner. Having made a name and a reputation ahead of time his curriculum embraces participations with numerous famous acts such as Dj Hell, David J (Ex Bauhaus), Cross-over, Madonna and a tour with Ladytron. Add to his repertoire the two full length albums released with Emperor Norton and International Dj gigolo records respectively. Yeah, you practically have star, of dark nature, but still, a star. The EP comes in a 12” limited edition in clear vinyl with exclusive cover artwork by Peter Wu. The song “Grave” is a single advance for the forthcoming album “Happily ever after”.

The four songs that constitute this EP leave no place for boredom or indifference. From the more experimental piece that marks the entrance to the work: “Melting the ice” dealing with dub play, strong drum set and experimental pounding jerkness, low bass throbbing and acidic electric guitar lines (some reminiscence of “The fall” comes to mind), makes you to entirely reverb and immediately disposed for what will come next. Next song opens with a typical new wave guitar line, that cross its way through catchy synth sequences and raw post punk drums. This is the main song and name of the EP. “A grave”. “Digging our own graves... in the garden” repeats the chorus line in its kinda tagged drugged voice. It’s dark, it’s depressive, but it is definitively catchy and fun!

Third song presents a basic line of acidic guitar play with a very minimal drum set, equally addictive and moved. At this moment you’re rather seduced or backed off (if you don’t like this kind of music or you’re already dead off course). The final song is the more electro influenced. Dense synth layers leads the way, the down beat takes hold and the voice almost recites it’s desperate clamour.

This work is really a must. Seductive and promising, as an example of reconstruction from a set of genres that is considered dead. Mt Sims is able to bring that quote of 80’s angst and apathy and combining it with the relentless power of the apocalyptic beat we actually live into. Totally recommended.
