Unsure of whether or not Fox would cancel Millennium at the end of Season 2, creator Chris Carter and producers Glen Morgan and James Wong thought up a suitable apocalyptic ending that could also double as a series finale: Frank Black's (Lance Henriksen) wife dies of a mysterious contagion, leaving Black near-catatonic from the loss. For its third and final season, set five months after the events of Season 2, Frank is now living alone with his daughter Jordan (Brittany Tiplady), and consulting for the FBI so as to qualify for counseling benefits. As he slowly heals, his special abilities -- which allow him to "see" into the minds of serial killers -- bring him back into working for the FBI full time. Carter eased up the show's dark tone a bit in season three, and also steered it more in the direction of The X-Files. Clea Scott joins the cast as FBI agent Emma Hollis, a young protégé for Black; and Peter Outerbridge is introduced as Special Agent Barry Baldwin, a hotheaded young agent who matures into a valued member of Black's inner circle. Fans were also treated to even more unfortunate upheaval in Season 3 with the revelation that Black's former compatriot Peter Watts (Terry O'Quinn) and the Millennium Group were now working against Black and the FBI. Despite the changes, however, Season 3 of Millennium provides some of the better episodes of the series, including the season's two-part opener, "The Innocents" and "Exegesis"; "Borrowed Time," which features Tiplady in a stellar performance; and "Collateral Damage," boasting Buffy/Angel veteran James Marsters as a psychotic Gulf War veteran. "The Sound of Snow" ties up the show's "mythology" with a ghostly appearance by Black's wife Catherine (Megan Gallagher), while the two-part series finale, "Via Dolorosa" and "Goodbye to All That," sends Black and Jordan off toward an uncertain future.
