With The X-Files comfortably entering its fourth season in 1996, producer Chris Carter turned his talent for dark TV thrills toward a new series, Millennium, enlisting film mainstay Lance Henriksen as former FBI agent Frank Black, the show's lead. The show explores Black's efforts to catch serial killers by using his strange ability to get inside the heads of the perpetrators to "see" what the killers experienced. The Silence of the Lambs-inspired concept was so fresh that NBC employed it that very fall for a show of its own, Profiler, only with an attractive woman (Ally Walker) in the lead. Millennium distinguished itself by being a much darker show, often awash in apocalyptic prophecies, cultism, and biblical references that made for intelligent drama. Black, having left his profiling job with the FBI after a breakdown, moves to Seattle with his wife, Catherine (Megan Gallagher), and daughter, Jordan (Brittany Tiplady), to put his life back together. He is now a consultant with the Millennium Group, a cadre of former law enforcement officers that aid the police with difficult cases. In the show's pilot episode, Black's gift (or "curse," as he calls it) pulls him into a serial-murder case where the killer believes he is cleansing the earth of evil, and the profiler's demons return to haunt him. Highlight episodes include "The Judge," wherein Black becomes involved in the hunt for a killer after a Seattle resident receives a human tongue in the mail. "Kingdom Come" has Frank searching for a killer who burns clergymen to death on ceremonial pyres. The investigation in "Force Majeure" points toward a celestial alignment of the planets to explain the suicides of two girls. Black's family figures in "Sacrament" -- wherein his daughter Jordan witnesses her aunt's kidnapping -- and in the two-parter "Lamentation" and "Powers, Principalities, Thrones and Dominions." The latter involves the escape of one of Black's collars, a particularly nasty serial killer who Black expects to target his family. Often unnerving and occasionally graphically violent, Millennium offers viewers a look into the darkness and drama of human existence. Christina Urban
