Płyta zawiera nagrania zarejestrowane podczas trzech sesji w styczniu i kwietniu 1949 r., a także w marcu 1950 r. oraz podczas transmisji radiowej z koncertu, który odbył się w nowojorskim klubie The Royal Roost we wrześniu 1948 roku. Pomysł polegał na tym, by miękkie brzmienie orkiestry Claude’a Thornhilla, dla której aranżował Gil Evans, przełożyć na zespół kameralny. Jak wspominał Gil Evans, „wszystko zostało zredukowane, by stworzyć brzmienie i niczego nie można było użyć, co odrywałoby uwagę od brzmienia. Brzmienie wisiało jaki chmura”.



Od pierwszych utworów muzyka wyróżnia się subtelnością brzmienia i wyrafinowaniem, połączeniem stylistyki swingowej z wyraźnie zarysowanym modernizmem europejskim. Walorem płyty są także kapitalne improwizacje, zwłaszcza Gerry’ego Mulligana „Budo”, „Godchild”, Lee Konitza „Move”, „S’il vous plait” i Davisa „Move”, „Budo”, „Godchild”.
