"Following the acclaimed release of Mickey Newbury s An American Trilogy box set which was named Mojo s 2011 Reissue of the Year Mountain Retreat, the label Mickey founded in 1995 to self-release his music, is set to reissue another three long out-of-print Newbury albums: Lulled by the Moonlight , Stories from the Silver Moon Cafe and Blue to This Day . Originally released in 1996, as a limited edition CD and only available for purchase from his official website, Lulled by the Moonlight was Mickey s first album of original material for 15 years. He had been without a major record deal since 1981 s Mercury Records-released After All These Years and had distanced himself from the music industry. When it came to recording the album, Mickey s reputation was still such that he was able to draw on a large pool of musicians, including Nashville session legends such as drummers Gene Chrisman and Roger Hawkins, guitarists Reggie Young and Mike Elliot, as well as guitarist Jack Williams, who also played live with Mickey. Conceived as a tribute to Mickey s songwriting hero, Stephen Foster, the title of the album comes from a line in Foster s Beautiful Dreamer and opens with Three Bells for Stephen , a tribute to him in song. This serves as a springboard for a suite of songs dealing with memory, loss and mortality, given added poignancy that, just prior to recording the album, Mickey had been diagnosed with chronic lung disease. Despite his illness, he would continue to record and tour right up until his death in 2002. The songs on the album are linked, in Mickey s unique style, by atmospheric interludes that hark back to the classic run of albums he recorded between 1969 and 1981. This new edition of Lulled by the Moonlight is housed in a digisleeve with cover art (a vintage 1903 tinted photograph) taken from the collection of Mickey s friend Walter Sill (the founder of 70s Wild West/Country Music theme park, Kaintuck Territory) and includes a 20-page booklet of lyrics. "
