Hermux Tantamoq is a mouse to watch (pun intended). He mends them - watches and clocks - for a living. Hoeye put all his savings into publishing this book himself in the US and the gamble paid off. And although its main characters are mice and moles it is anything but cute - hairy rather than furry. I read it aloud to my 10-year old and although he kept saying 'this is strange' he wanted to go on reading. Tantamoq appoints himself the rescuer of an aviatrix and mouse fatale, Ms Linka Perflinger but the role of saviour nearly kills him. He is no action-mouse, more of a young fogey. The outlandish plot's most vital ingredient is an elixir for eternal youth - a formula to die - and kill - for. The plot is slightly distrait; (it reads like the first novel it is). It hives off in unexpected directions and sometimes seems to have gone missing altogether like Terfle, Herman's pet ladybird. But when we reached the end of the story, my son actually applauded.
