Series 2 of Spooks (known as MI-5 in the U.S.), the fictional BBC1 show about the U.K.'s real-life security service, MI-5, ended with quite a bang: After being set up for the murder of the chief of Defense, Agent Tom Quinn (Matthew MacFadyen) was forced to shoot his superior and friend, Harry Pearce (Peter Firth) and disappear. As 2004's Series 3 opens, Quinn is on the run and hiding out as a homeless man, determined to clear his name. Unfortunately, the head of the Joint Intelligence Committee, Oliver Mace (Tim McInnerny, in a recurring role) takes the opportunity to launch a surveillance investigation into MI-5, so the team of Zoe (Keeley Hawes), Danny (David Oyelowo), and new recruit Adam (Rupert Penry-Jones) and his wife, MI-6 operative Fiona (Olga Sosnovska), must work under the radar to clear Quinn's name. The remainder of Series 3 deals with MI-5's usual attempts at thwarting threats to Britain's national security. Notable among these episodes is "Persephone," in which Zoe is charged with conspiracy to commit murder, and the cliffhanger season finale, "The Suffering of Strangers," wherein the writers of MI-5 once again surprise their viewing audience by killing off a major character.
