Now, almost sixty years later, the Royal Mint has struck an official commemorative crown to celebrate the Diamond Wedding anniversary of the Queen and Prince Philip.

On 20 November 1947, as the bells rang out from Westminster Abbey, the royal procession made its way from Buckingham Palace passing thousands of well wishers lining the streets of London all hoping to catch a glimpse of the young Princess. At twenty-one, Princess Elizabeth was to marry Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, and the happy occasion of a royal wedding brought much needed cheer to post-war Britain.

Dressed in her ivory satin Norman Hartnell gown, the Princess looked radiant as she was led down the aisle by her proud father, King George VI. Waiting at the alter was the handsome groom, who had been newly created Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich, and given the title ‘His Royal Highness’. Much of the marriage ceremony was enjoyed not only by the crowds who thronged Parliament Square and the environs of the Abbey but also by people in every corner of the globe. Radio reporters from all over the world were in London to witness the royal wedding and, in their own language, relayed the events to captive audiences everywhere.

Sixty years have almost passed since that joyous day and the official commemorative crown has been struck to celebrate the Queen and Prince Philip’s Diamond Wedding anniversary.
