Opis albumu |
>>> Większa okładka A <<< An exceptionally beautiful rcording of Mendelssohn, with violinist Joseph Swensen. 'Lack[s] nothing in attack or passion but benefit[s] in clarity of detail from the chamber size of the ensemble and the superb recording standards befitting this label.' The Observer The response of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra to the crisis in the recoridng industry is both innovative and risky. Other orchestras can be accused of fiddling while Rome burns but the SCO has struck a deal with the Glasgow-based recording company Linn, whereby neither party benefits unless the discs sell. By contrast, most recording companies negotiate a fee with the orchestra up front, while the players have contracts which inlcude recording rights. But the SCO is a freelance orchestra, with the musicians paid only when they actually play. This makes recording an expensive proposition, so despite the orchestra's international reputation, recordings have all but disappeared from its prospectus. The deal with Linn pays the players half the normal fee as an advance against royalties from the sale of discs. With profits divided between the two companies, sales will have to be large to make the venture work at all. Doubtless the players would have preferred to play for the full fee but they were eventually persuaded that this is the only way of maintaining the orchestra's recording protfolio without breaking the bank. Enough of the politics - how about the music? The first disc brings together some of Mendelssohn's most popular music: the Hebrides Overture, third symphony, and violin concerto, in which the orchestra's principal conductor, Joseph Swensen, is the soloist. IN the concerto the benefits of combining the role of conductor and soloist are apparent early on in a performance of great charm and flexibility. I remember noting Swensen's daring approach to tempi in a terrific performance of Schumann's fourth symphony earlier this year. Here he lets the music sweep him and the orchestra from moments of introspection to a flurry of rapid-fire notes with exhilirating agility. Mendelssohn's concerto is known for its lyrical purity, but Swensen tempers the cloying sweetness by exploring the darker moments with shadowy, almost eerie note quality.
