Synopsis

This guide covers 81 hills and mountains in the Scottish Highlands. Detailed walking maps in the Trailblazer style including tricky trail junctions, walking times and points of interest written onto the maps themselves. It also details places to eat, local sights and a full-colour flora identification section.

From the Author

As the author of this book I would like to respond to the review dated 11 July 07. In it the reviwer uses the following statement as a criticism: "Do not under any circumstances rely on the book alone, get a decent scale map and compass...". I agree; on page 27 of the book I wrote: "On clear days these maps [in the book] will help in navigating along the routes described but sadly the weather does not always oblige and walkers can lose their way. For this reason it is still necessary to carry an overall map of the area...Many of the walks in this book cross remote, featureless terrain where it can become necessary to navigate off distant landmarks. In mist you may need to take bearings using a map and compass."

It would be irresponsible to write a guidebook to hill-walking and in it suggest that the book is all you need, forget about the map and compass. All good hill-walking guidebooks advocate the use of map and compass (and knowledge of how to use them).

Anyone who ventures into the Scottish hills needs to be aware of the dangers. This book goes into great detail to highlight them. It is a "guide" book, not a replacement for map, compass (or GPS) and common sense.

Having got that off my chest, I'd just like to say I welcome any feedback. I have had plenty of positive responses. Look out for the second edition - due out in spring 2009. Enjoy the hills...and don't forget your map and compass.
