Leo Kottke :: One Guitar, No Vocals
1999.
The title pretty much sums up the recording. "One Guitar, No Vocals" is an all instrumental album by one of the most wide-ranging guitarists of his era. Leo Kottke offers music inspired by flooding hotel rooms ("Snorkel"), Big John and Little Sparky ("Retrograde"), Christmas ("Accordian Bells"), poor white trash ("Peckerwood"), love ("Blimp") and Whitney Balliet's piece on Pee Wee Russell ("Even His Feet Look Sad"). Two tracks from Alan Sharp's movie "Little Treasure" are included ("Three/Quarter North" and "From 'Little Treasure'"), as well as a re-recorded, originally vocal tune ("Morning Is The Long Way Home"). Instrumental treasures as only Kottke can deliver tchem.

Leo rules !
"This guy is simply one of a kind - a true artist that doesnt care a bit about commercial success. Aside from his technical wizardry, Kottke is also a master song or "tune" writer. His albums are always full of energy and never dull. You'll find yourself humming a melody from one of his tunes all day long. This is a nice return to just raw guitar with no effects, overdubs, other instruments etc. I love his vocal tracks and would have liked one or two here but weve got plenty of albums with vocals. Check out his reworking of 3/4 North (originally from A Shout Towards Noon) - it will leave you speachless.
Ive seen him live 4 or 5 times now and he is actually better live than on record. His odd sense of humor, self-effacing personality and gift for telling some of the most bizarre and hilarious stories make his shows unforgettable.
Other favorite albums from Kottke:
- 6 & 12 String Guitar
- My Fathers Face
- A Shout Towards Noon
I would recommend, however, buying all..."

History
"Morning is the Long Way Home" is a re-recorded version of the instrumental break that first appeared on Ice Water. The shortened version first appeared on 1[zasłonięte]971-19. The song "Three Quarter North" is a slower version, done in 3/4 time, of "Four Four North" from the album A Shout Toward Noon. Originally recorded for the 1985 Tri-Star motion picture Little Treasure comes the piece "From 'Little Treasure'". A different version of "Accordion Bells" appears on Carols of Christmas II (1997) on BMG/Windham Hill where it was first recorded. The song "Bigger Situation" is a re-working and combining of "Big Situation", "I Yell at Traffic", and "Room Service (at the Tahiti Motel)". The song "Chamber of Commerce" was originally introduced at live performances as "Goddammit" and as written in response to the accidental death of Michael Hedges.
